Fantasy Hurricane Update

October 22, 2007 | Comments (0) | by Jake the Terrible Cubs Fan

It's been a long, long while since I updated the standings for the TMS Fantasy Hurricane League. Here's a list of the storms that occurred since my last update.

Felix - 210 points
Gabrielle - 55
Humberto - 95
Ingrid - 5
Jerry - 5
Karen - 5
Lorenzo - 45
Melissa - 5

The Gov was the big winner here, as he picked Felix, Gabrielle and Melissa to give him a total of 270 point, which is good enough to put him in first place. Also, after a second review, I've revised the total score given to Hurricane Dean previously. Instead of 235 points, it earned 250 points. So Chaim's score with the addition of Karen is 255. Here's how the full standings look.

1. Governor Gray Davis - 270 points
2. Chaim Witz - 255 points
3. Chip Wesley - 140 points
4. Chi-Town Girl - 95 points
5. Brant Brown - 65 points

As the season begins to wind down, it looks like the Gov may hold on to the lead. The next possible storm is Noel which was the Gov's 4th round pick. Chaim's next possible storm on his roster is Rebekah. And who knows? There's always a chance that Chi-Town Girl could still strike it big with Olga or Pablo.

Bartender Banter: Riding the Storm Out

August 27, 2007 | Comments (0) | by Jake the Terrible Cubs Fan

Yuck. That image says it all. What a crappy way to end the weekend. No matter. The Cubs are still a game and a half ahead of the Brewers, who now sit at .500. Starting tomorrow the two teams will face each other for the last time this season in a three game series at Miller Park. If everything goes right, we could be putting the Brewers to rest for good, leaving only the Cards to worry about*.

Just in time for the pivotal series, Alfonso Soriano will return to the lineup. Hopefully his presence alone will give this team a nice confidence boost.

Hurricane League Update
Well we had two storms make some noise recently. My first round pick, Erin reached Tropical Storm status before making landfall near the Texas-Mexico border. Not a bad performance as I netted 85 points from her.

The big winner though was Chaim, who's first round pick Dean kicked some ass in the Caribbean. Becoming the first hurricane of the season, Dean wreaked havoc on the Lesser and Greater Antilles before hitting the coveted Category 5 mark before slamming into Mexico. The official score on Dean: 235 points. Well done Chaim.

So here's how standings breakdown.

1. Chaim Witz - 230 points
2. Chip Wesley - 90 points
3. Brant Brown - 60 points
4. Chi-Town Girl - 0 points
5. Governor Gray Davis - 0 points

The Govenor and Chi-Town haven't had any storms yet, but that should change soon. The Gov took Felix and Gabrielle with his first two picks and Chi-Town took Humberto in the first round.

Time for Football
I have to admit. With the Cubs still very much in the playoff hunt, I really haven't devoted much time to the fast-approaching football season. Not that I would have any idea what was going on had I tuned in anyway. Every time you flip to ESPN it's all about Michael Vick. Apparently he did something to a dog and now people are mad. I don't know, I haven't heard much about this.

Anyway, you can look forward to some sort of a football preview this week from us. Also I updated my fantasy football cheat sheets a while back, so check them out if you've got a draft coming up. The latest update now includes IDP as well. If you don't know what IDP is, you probably don't have it in your league, so don't worry about it.

TMS Radio Revival
I'm working on getting this going again. The plan is to make it an ongoing feature with various playlists put together by the bartenders. I'm working on a separate site that will serve as the home for TMS Radio and archive all the playlists we create, so readers can check them out any time they please. Stay tuned.

They're All Wasted!
Out here in the fields
I fight for my meals
I get my back into my living.
I don't need to fight
To prove I'm right
I don't need to be forgiven.
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Thanks to everyone who voted on our Cubs Theme Song Poll. Baba O'Riley by The Who was the winner, beating out Don't Stop Me Now by Queen by 4 votes. So what now? Did our lowly poll really matter or change anything? Probably not. But you can do your part. Wherever you are, at a bar, at home with friends, at work, or by yourself. Anytime the Cubs finish victorious, crank up Baba O'Riley on your stereo, iPod, computer, parent's hi-fi, or bar jukebox. Maybe, just maybe we can create a trend. Hell, the trend may already be starting. Check out this email we got from TMS regular Nick V.
True story, I kid you not. I was at Cortland Garage in Bucktown tonight. As soon as the Cubs beat the D-Backs, they blasted "Baba O'Riley." This only has one of two explanations... (And NO, I did not request it, nor did anyone that I saw)

1) They are frequent visitors to the Thunder Matt blog and adhered to the poll wishes and blasted Baba O'Riley
2) Fate. Fate. Fate. And the Cubs will win it all in 2007.

You decide. I just work here.

Cheers,

Nick V
Honestly, I'm hoping for all of the above.

Bartender Banter: Pulling Up Lame

August 06, 2007 | Comments (0) | by Jake the Terrible Cubs Fan

Well that sucked.

It was a rough weekend series, between the shoddy defense, to the miserable bullpen work, to having to endure McCarver/Buck one day and Joe Morgan the next. Last night's game could be the one that we look back on later as the turning point for the Cubs season if they falter down the stretch. Soriano pulling up lame on his way to third base drew gasps from the crowd, and you could just sense the total deflation happening inside Wrigley. Turns out, Soriano will likely be out for a month, which leaves us with a gaping hole in left field as well as the lead off spot.

Then there was the pitching. How much more of this will we have to endure? Will Ohman has been absolutely atrocious as of late, and Scott Eyre and Ryan Dempster haven't been much better. At least Kerry Wood's one inning of work sparked some enthusiasm back into the crowd, and just for a little while, we could witness what a good relief pitcher can look like.

By the way, seeing Joe Morgan and Jon Miller in HD = Yikes!

So now they hit the road starting with tonight's game in Houston. One would assume that with Soriano out, Ryan Theriot will get first shake at the leadoff spot. Of course I'm pulling for Thunder Matt to see time at left field and with lefty Wandy Rodriguez starting tonight, I think he'll probably get the start, with possibly Pagan in CF and Floyd in RF. Of course with Soriano hitting the DL, that would most likely bring Felix Pie back for another run.

I'm not ready to hit the panic button yet though. We still have two months to go, and there's still some good talent on this team. Let's just see if this series against Houston will get things back on track.

Football? What's a Football?
It's about that time again. As the NFL season is about a month away, you can expect to see some football coverage to begin real soon at the Saloon. We plan on bringing you our own NFL preview, and perhaps a return of the TMS Tecmo Super Simulator 2000 later on. Also for you fantasy geeks out there. Be sure and check our football rankings, which I hope to have updated later this week.

Fantasy Hurricane League Update
Well so far things have been pretty quiet in the 2007 TMS Fantasy Hurricane League. Here's a quick recap of what's transpired.

Subtropical Storm Andrea, May 9 to May 11 - My fourth round pick. It never quite made landfall and was pretty much a bust. Score = 5 points.

Tropical Storm Barry, June 1 to June 2 - The number one overall pick never gained much strength, but made solid landfall in the states. Score = 55 points.

Tropical Storm Chantal, July 31 to August 1 - Brant's second round pick only affected Newfoundland, but since Canada isn't in our scoring table, this storm proved to be inconsequential. Score = 5 points.

So after three storms here is the current standings.

1. Brant Brown - 60 points
2. Chip Wesley - 5 points
3. Chaim Witz - 0 points
4. Chi-Town Girl - 0 points
5. Governor Gray Davis - 0 points

TMS Radio, Take 2
I was playing around with things on MediaMaster today and noticed they've made a few changes to how the radio stations work. The biggest improvement being that now when you listen to the radio station on your media player (Winamp, iTunes), it will display the name of the song and the artist. It didn't have that before so if you weren't familiar with a song, you had no idea what it was or who it was from. I may play around with this once again in the coming weeks. The embedded media player will not be coming back though as it severely bogged the site down.

TMS Fantasy Hurricane League 2007

May 09, 2007 | Comments (0) | by Jake the Terrible Cubs Fan

Well we finished up the draft last week, and my lazy butt hasn't gotten around to posting the results. But with Andrea jumping the gun by about 3 weeks I should probably get this thing going.

First off, let me refresh ourselves with the scoring system.

STORM STATUS POINTS
  • Become (Sub)Tropical Storm = 5 Points
  • Category 1 Hurricane = 10 Points
  • Category 2 = 20 Points
  • Category 3 = 30 Points
  • Category 4 = 40 Points
  • Category 5 = 50 Points
STORM LANDFALL POINTS
  • United States = 50 Points
  • Mexico = 30 Points
  • Cuba = 20 Points
  • Hispaniola (Haiti/Domincan Republic) = 20 Points
  • Central American Countries = 10 Points each
  • Bermuda = 5 Points
  • The following Caribbean nations and commonwealths = 5 Points each:
  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Aruba
  • Barbados
  • Bahamas
  • Virgin Islands (British and U.S. count as one)
  • Cayman Islands
  • Jamaica
  • Martinique
  • Montserrat
  • Puerto Rico
  • Saint Lucia
  • Trinidad and Tobago
OTHER U.S. POINTS
  • Mass Evacuations = 30 points per state
  • County/Parish declared disaster area = 10 points per county/parish
Once a storm reaches Tropical Storm status it earns a name. Members will get 5 points for that. They will then earn points for every category it grows to from there on. If it gets to Category 1 hurricane status you would get an additional 10 points. Cat. 2, an additional 20. So if your storm hits the magical category 5 you will have accrued a total of 155 points. If a storm weakens and downgrades, but then later gains strength again and upgrades, you will not receive any additional credit for category levels that have already been reached. So if your storm goes from category 2 back to 1 and back up to 2, you do not get credit for the second category 2 status. Once the storm hits, you will get 10 points for every county/parish declared a federal disaster area. Disaster areas must be declared by the state's governor to receive credit.

Whichever team earns the most points at the conclusion of hurricane season wins.

The only real changes to this from last season is that Bermuda was added, and also it now reads "Caribbean nations and commonwealths" after I had an argument of semantics with the Governor.

Taking part are the same five folks from last year, consisting of Chaim, Brant, The Gov, Chi-Town Girl and myself. We would've asked Buzanis to join, but we have a strict requirement that all participants actually write something for the Saloon first. That and we already know what his answer would've been.

Without further ado, here were the draft results.

ROUND 1
Brant - Barry
Chi-Town - Humberto
The Gov - Felix
Chip - Erin
Chaim - Dean

ROUND 2
Chaim - Karen
Chip - Lorenzo
The Gov - Gabrielle
Chi-Town - Olga
Brant - Chantal

ROUND 3
Brant - Jerry
Chi-Town - Pablo
The Gov - Melissa
Chip - Ingrid
Chaim - Sebastien

ROUND 4
Chaim - Rebekah
Chip - Andrea
The Gov - Noel
Chi-Town - Wendy
Brant - Tanya

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that Brant's choice of Barry with the #1 pick will be the Mario Williams pick of fantasy hurricane drafts. No way Barry outperforms Humberto or Felix.

TMS Fantasy Hurricane Draft Preview

May 01, 2007 | Comments (0) | by Jake the Terrible Cubs Fan

Well the NFL draft has come and gone, and we can all now focus on the draft that truly matters. I'm of course referring to the 2007 TMS Fantasy Hurricane League draft. We created the league last year, mainly out of sheer boredom once it was realized the Cubs season was in the toilet. Sadly following natural disasters last summer wasn't any more exciting than watching the disaster unfold at Wrigley, as the Atlantic hurricane season proved to be much more mild than had previously been forecast. Chaim won solely off the performance of Ernesto. Here's the link to last year's draft and scoring system if you're interested. We'll be sticking with the same scoring format with only one change. Bermuda will be added to the storm landfall list with a value of 5 points.

Anyway, let's break down the potential storms for this season. This year's list of hurricane hopefuls make their long-awaited return after a fairly productive 2001 season. Of the 17 named storms, three left their indelible mark and were retired. They were Allison, Iris, and Michelle. Taking their place this year are rookies Andrea, Ingrid, and Melissa. Melissa will have the toughest shoes to fill as the M storms have been retired the last two seasons this list has appeared (Marilyn was retired in 1995).

Here's a brief rundown of the rest of the '07 field.

Barry - Only reached Tropical Storm in 2001, making U.S. landfall. A crafty veteran in the pack, Barry has been around for over two decades but has never quite lived up to the hype of his 1983 debut, in which he earned a career-best Category 1 status. As such, Barry is often referred to as the Jerome Walton of storms.

Chantal - Chantal is another veteran storm with an unpredictability streak that is typical of storms with stripper names. Despite success in the 1980's, Chantal suffers from self esteem issues and hasn't achieved greater than TS status since 1989.

Dean - Reached Category 2 in '89 but overall Dean lacks a discernible mean streak. I mean honestly, when you think of Dean, what comes to mind? This guy, right?

Erin - All the intangibles are there for Erin to be a retired storm. A three-time hurricane in her career, she's always had the power but has trouble making contact. She's the Dave Kingman of the group.

Felix - Felix might as well be Erin's twin brother. Another three-time hurricane, but unlike Erin, has never made substantial landfall in his career.

Gabrielle - Gabby made her debut in 1989 as a powerful Category 4 that never made landfall. While she's made landfall twice since, she's never been able to recapture the power.

Humberto - Humberto is the equivalent of the post-Elway era Broncos QB. Filling the shoes of the mighty Hugo after his retirement in '89, Humberto has been a relative bust. Despite reaching category 2 in 1995 and 2001, he has yet to make any significant landfall.

Jerry - With a penchant for trailer trash, Jerry has been very successful at finding land, striking the U.S. two different times.

Karen - A perennial underachiever, Karen was actually wiped out by Iris in 1995, when the more powerful storm absorbed her. Nonetheless, Karen comes from a historic lineage. Typhoon Karen terrorized the Western Pacific throughout the 1950's and '60's.

Lorenzo - Lock up your daughters, here comes Lorenzo. Making his debut in 2001 for the retired Luis, Lorenzo failed to make any real waves (pun intended), only reaching TS status and fizzling out in the middle of the Atlantic. Also goes by the name of Hurricane Buzanis.

Noel - Noel has been a hurricane twice without ever making landfall. Often criticized for ripping off his style from Hurricane's Paul, George, John, and Ringo.

Olga - Made her debut in 2001, replacing Opal to little fanfare. After failing to reach any land, she fucked up a single yacht in the Atlantic, basically just to be a dick.

Pablo - A virtual recluse. Pablo made a brief appearance in 1995 as a tropical storm, and hasn't been seen or heard from since.

Rebekah - A replacement for the retired Roxanne in 2001, Rebekah never made it up to the show that year. With expectations high for a busy year, we'll see if she gets a cup of coffee in '07.

Sebastien and Tanya - Sebastien and Tanya have only made appearances in one season (1995). Neither achieved much. Tanya did hit the Azores which isn't entirely common. What? You don't know where the Azores are? Well they're an island chain immediately west off the coast of Portugal. Their chief exports are- huh....what's that? Oh, you said you don't care? My bad.

Van and Wendy - These two are the journeymen minor leaguers of the group. Neither have ever made it to the show. The only W name to ever make it was Wilma, the Lawrence Taylor of storms.

So there's your 2007 draft class. Stay tuned as we will bring you the results of our draft sometime in the coming month.

Hell in a Handbasket

December 02, 2006 | Comments (0) | by Governor X

Let me be the one to say it, the world is going straight to hell. Here are some reasons why:

The inaugural Fantasy Hurricane League ended without even a whimper. Apparently Chaim Witz won based on Ernesto, but all in all it was a bust on par with Geraldo opening Al Capone's vault. Congrats to Chaim...I suppose.

Geraldo is still on the air too. If that doesn't tell you the end is near, I don't know what does.

The San Francisco Giants signed Dave Fucking Roberts to a 3 year/$18 million deal. As a Dodger fan I love this, but seriously, what the hell are they thinking up north?

The Dodgers big splash in the free agent market thus far has been aquiring Juan Pierre and Randy Wolf. Just kill me now.

The Broncos have decided to go to a rookie quarterback in the midst of a playoff run. First it was the tandem running backs of Bell and Bell, now this. Has Shanahan finally lost his mind?

Foxsports put together a list of the top ten ugliest uniforms ever and somehow left off the seizure inducing Chargers' "powder blues".

Kid Rock and Pam Anderson are getting divorced. What hope is there for the rest of us?

Vladimir Putin is poisoning anyone and everyone who has ever made Russia look bad. Its only a matter of time until Yakov Smirnoff turns up dead.

Apocalypto.

I think thats it for now. Enjoy your remaining days.

Fantasy Hurricane Fizzle

October 03, 2006 | Comments (0) | by Jake the Terrible Cubs Fan

Make room in the annals of failed leagues. The 2006 Fantasy Hurricane League can probably be chalked up as a major bust at this point. I'm not sure we could've done anything to spruce up Mother Nature's wrath, or lack thereof. When nothing hits land there's very little scoring to be done. If there is a 2007 season though we're definitely adding Bermuda to the scoring list. Those bastards have been hit a handful of times. I just hope NBC renews our contract for next season. Anyway here's an update of the storms so far.
  • Beryl - 55 points
  • Chris - 10 Points
  • Debby - 5 Points
  • Ernesto - 105 Points
  • Florence - 15 Points
  • Gordon - 65 Points
  • Helene - 65 Points
  • Isaac - 15 Points
And here is an update of the current standings.
  1. Chaim Witz - 105
  2. Chip Wesley - 75
  3. GovGrayDavis- 75
  4. Chi-Town Girl - 65
  5. BrantBrown - 15
That'd be pretty weak if Chaim wins based on the wimpy ass Ernesto brushing against a few islands. I'm holding out hope that Joyce can perhaps bring the fury.

2006 Fantasy Hurricane League

June 19, 2006 | Comments (2) | by Jake the Terrible Cubs Fan

Well since our last post the Cubs have put on a 6-game crapfest. I can deal with the Cubs sucking for the most part but its become damn hard to write about them this season. As soon as they fall behind by 3 or more runs, I turn the game off. They basically give up once they're down by a few runs, its just sickening. And we might as well dub Roberto Novoa the nickname "Surrender". Whenever they throw him in its as if the Cubs have given up all hope for a comeback.

Anyway, enough about the Scrubs for now. There's more important things to talk about, like: The 2006 TMS Fantasy Hurricane League. That's right, to further cement our seats on the bus straight to hell, we've devised a fantasy leagues for the upcoming hurricane season, which has been predicted to be huge.

So here's the premise. Each member of the Saloon participated in a four-round draft. Each member picked from the list of 2006 hurricane names that will be used this season. Alberto had already become a Tropical Storm at the time of the draft so that pick was not allowed. Once the draft concluded, each Saloon member had a team of four possible hurricanes to earn points with. The scoring will go as such.

STORM STATUS POINTS
  • Become Tropical Storm = 5 Points
  • Category 1 Hurricane = 10 Points
  • Category 2 = 20 Points
  • Category 3 = 30 Points
  • Category 4 = 40 Points
  • Category 5 = 50 Points
STORM LANDFALL POINTS
  • United States = 50 Points
  • Mexico = 30 Points
  • Cuba = 20 Points
  • Hispaniola (Haiti/Domincan Republic) = 20 Points
  • Central American Countries = 10 Points each
  • The following Caribbean nations = 5 points each:

The draft was held last week. We went with a serpentine draft to keep with true fantasy league formats. The order went as such:
  1. Chaim Witz
  2. Brant Brown
  3. Governor Gray Davis
  4. Chip Wesley
  5. Chi-Town Girl
Here's what transpired.

ROUND 1
CHAIM: My pick is Ernesto. Hurricane Prospectus has Ernesto as "a blue chip prospect with a bad attitude and a appetite for destruction. Also goes by the nickname 'Motherfucker'".

BRANT: With the second pick in the inaugural 2006 Hurricane Fantasy Draft, Brant Brown selects: Hurricane Isaac, former Tropical Storm, University of Miami Hurricanes.
Overheard in the draft room: "Fantastic pick by the Brant Brown squad. Isaac has a ton of upside, and he's long, so his diameter will have an excellent chance of brushing the mainland on a variety of Caribbean Islands and possibly the continental United States. I haven't been this excited about a pick since Andrew in 1992." -- Willard Scott

GOV: With the third pick in the inaugural 2006 Hurrican Fantasy Draft, GovernorGrayDavis selects: Hurricane Chris, aka "The Caribbean Crusher"
"Classic sabremetric hurricane selection. The Gov is playing the numbers here, recognizing "C" hurricanes have a high OSP (On Shore Percentage) and excellent DSM (Destruction per Square Mile). The folks over at the front office clearly believe they have another 'Camille' on their hands."

CHIP: With the fourth pick in the 2006 Hurricane Fantasy Draft, Chip Wesley selects: Hurricane Florence.
"Not as blockbuster as previous picks, but Flo has all the intangibles that Chip likes in his storms. Not much is known about Flo but scouts say she ranks high on the C5P scale (Category 5 Potential).

CHAIM: Ok I am going to be on vacation in Jamaica from Sept 8-14.
If one of those hits while I'm there the person that has that hurricane should just automatically win or at least get jackpot bonus points. If said hurricane hurts, maims or kills me they also get first pick in next years draft.
If I think I may survive though, midway through the storm I will curse this game (and you fuckers) and throw myself at the mercy of the wind, letting it carry my pasty white body out to sea, preferabbly so I can be attacked by a great white shark and die a proper death.

CHI-TOWN: I've spoken with Mike Hodges and he's told me that he's cut a deal with Ming the Merciless from the planet Mongo. They have assured him that Hurricane Michael will be topping the charts this year. Appropriately, I will be also selecting Hurricane Gordon in case the deal falls through.

ROUND 2
Chi-Town Girl made Gordon her 2nd round pick.

CHIP: My pick is Debby. This will keep my all-chick hurricane team plus I get dibs on all "Debby Does the Dominican" jokes. Ba-dum-ching!

GOV: GovernorGrayDavis picked Helene because its similar to Helena, his favorite city in Montana and My Chemical Romance song. He has nothing to offer at this point.

BRANT:
With the 9th pick overall, Brant Brown selects: Hurricane Leslie.
From the draft room: "Another superb pick by the folks at senior management. I forecast Hurricane Leslie as having tremendous upside potential in 2006. Just check out this video footage from last month's combine".

CHAIM:
Chaim Witz selects Hurricane Kirk (Cameron), "a whirling dervish of death and broken dreams", and Hurricane Sandy who, as a freshman "was not much more than a glorified fart...an undersized tweener who makes up for lesser physical skills with heart, passion and galeforce."

at this point our banter wore down so here is the remaining picks without the witty remarks.

12. BRANT - Tony
13. GOV - Oscar
14. CHIP - Joyce
15. CHI-TOWN - Nadine
16. CHI-TOWN - Patty
17. CHIP - Beryl
18. GOV - Rafael
19. BRANT - Valerie
20. CHAIM - William

And here's how the teams shaped up.
CHAIM Ernesto Kirk Sandy William
BRANT Isaac Leslie Tony Valerie
GOV Chris Helene Oscar Rafael
CHIP Florence Debby Joyce Beryl
CHI-TOWN
Michael Gordon Nadine Patty

We'll be updating the league progress as the season heats up.
