Crack open a beer...Because college football season is officially underway! So each week, I will (attempt) to recap the best - and the worst - games for you in quick and easy fashion...Much like your girlfriend at a frat party...Zing!

Premium games on tap...

TCU def. No. 9 BYU 32-7: Not only did TCU end BYU's 16-game winning streak, but they pretty much busted the Cougars' BCS hopes. TCU basically dominated this game from the beginning - they scored on their first 3 drives, 2 of which were directly off turnovers. Max Hall - who had only been sacked twice so far this season - was sacked 6 times, and threw 2 picks. He did, however, score the only touchdown for the Cougars - which didn't come until the third quarter. A nice upset for the Horned Frogs, and a bummer of a loss for BYU. Somewhere, Steve Young is crying...

Maryland def. No. 21 Wake Forest 26-0: Considering the score of this game, I'm sure you're assuming Maryland owned Wake Forest. And they did. The offense produced almost 500 yards, and obviously the defense did well - since they didn't allow any points. In fact, this was the first time Wake Forest has been shut out in 124 games. To see what a terrapin looks like, click here.

Virginia def. No. 18 UNC 16-13 in OT:
Although this game was kind of a snooze at the beginning, it had a pretty exciting ending. Virginia was losing 10-3 with about 2 minutes left to play, and then the offense put together an 82-yard scoring drive to send the game into overtime. Then, North Carolina kicked a field goal during their OT possession to go ahead 13-10...But Virginia one-upped UNC by scoring a touchdown during their OT possession to get the win. Somewhere, Michael Jordan is crying...

Honorable Mention: No. 2. Alabama def. Mississippi 24-20 ('Bama blew a big lead, but managed to hang on for the win. Somewhere, Eli Manning is crying); No. 13 LSU def. South Carolina 24-17 (LSU trailed at halftime, but scored 14 points in the second half to get the win); Boston College def. No. 17 Virginia Tech 28-23 (After trailing 10-0, BC scored 21 straight points, and hung on for the win); Arizona def. No. 25 Cal 42-27 (somewhere, Kyle Boller is crying...But that could be due to the fact that he's sitting on the bench).

Games that resembled the foam at the end of a keg of Natty Light:

No. 6 USC def. Washington State 69-0: The Condoms handed Washington State its first shutout since the 1980's. This was also the Cougars most lop-sided loss since they began playing in the late 1800's. Somewhere, Ryan Leaf is crying...But that could be due to the fact that he wakes up every morning and realizes he's Ryan Leaf.

No. 12 Ohio State def. No. 20 Michigan State 45-7:
Ohio State hasn't exactly been destroying its opponents lately, so I thought that this might be a pretty good game. I guess I was wrong.

TMS Alma Mater roundup
(schools attended by TMS bartenders highlighted in green):

No. 3 Penn State def. Michigan 46-17: Penn State continues to remain a title contender.

Northwestern def.
Purdue 48-26: Purdue looks to pick up its first Big Ten win next week against Minnesota.

Iowa def. Wisconsin 38-16: Iowa hands Wisconsin its fourth straight loss.

Northern Iowa def. North Dakota State 23-13: UNI's defense had 4 interceptions and recovered a fumble.

UCLA def. Stanford 23-20: UCLA scored a touchdown with 10 seconds left in the game to get the win. Apparently, Kevin Craft is only productive when running the 2-minute offense.

Euerka College def. Principia 47-19: Eureka produced almost 700 yards on offense? That has to be a typo...

New Mexico def. San Diego State 70-7: Oh dear...

Augustana def. Illinois Wesleyan University 21-13: This is only IWU's second loss of the season - and both of their losses have been decided by fewer than 10 points.

Florida State def. NC State 26-17: Florida State is now ranked.

Cubs of Yore: Kevin Foster 1969-2008

October 15, 2008 | Comments (0) | by Arcturus

Nickname: N/A

Played for the Cubs: 1994-1998

Random Write-Up: Kevin was one of many workman like pitchers who made up the Cubs' rotation from 1994 through 1998, joining the likes of Frank Castillo, Jim Bullinger, Steve Trachsel, Mike Morgan, Jaime Navarro, Mark Clark, and Mike Morgan. Foster's best year was in 1995, when he started 28 games for the Cubs, winning 12 and losing 11, posting a 4.51 ERA and striking out 140 batters. Unfortunately for Kevin, he pitched for some pretty mediocre Cubs teams during this time period and wasn't much more than an average pitcher himself. The Cubs did win the Wildcard in his final season as a Cub, but Kevin only pitched in 3 games that year, amassing a 16.20 ERA before succumbing to arm injuries.

Kevin was a nice guy and he was always one of my favorites to watch, but truthfully, he was on the team in an era where the Cubs management just didn't give a fuck about winning. Ironically, this was the period where I started to really develop an interest in the Cubs. My parents were Cub fans and I'd watched sporadically on and off through the years. Kevin's tenure as a Cub spans my college years and that's when I really became a die hard fan. During those four years, Mark Grace was my favorite player, the mainstay of the team throughout most of my life to that point. Kevin Foster was my favorite pitcher on the team until 1998, when the Cubs added a certain mustachioed, mulleted closer, and a young fresh-faced flamethrower from Texas reignited Cub fans' playoff dreams. I always felt bad for Kevin that his arm went out on him the one year the Cubs were any good while he was in Chicago. Sadly, he was a mostly undistinguished pitcher, save for being one of my favorite players during one of the Cubs' most ineffectual eras.

Kevin pitched in the majors once more in 2001 for the Texas Rangers. He only appeared in 9 games. Kevin Foster died of renal cancer on October 11th, 2008. He was working as a truck driver and engaged to be married. Sadly, he was only 39 years old.

What the Hell?: After being granted free agency by the Cubs in October of 1998, Foster signed with the Reds in November, his contract was voided in December. He was signed by the Brewers in February of 2000, released by the Brewers in March of 2000, signed by the Red Sox in April of 2000, granted free agency by the Red Sox in October 2000 without ever seeing the majors, signed by the Rangers in December of 2000, and was released by the Rangers in August of 2001. Jesus.

Did You Know?: After his major league career ended, Foster pitched for the St. Paul Saints in the independent Northern League in 2003 and 2004. He pitched in the 2003 Northern League All-Star Game, finishing 2003 with an ERA of 2.92 in 19 starts and a record of 12 and 4. The 2004 season, his last of professional baseball, was not as kind. His complete stats, major, minor, and independent can be found here.

Cubs of Yore: Matt Murton

October 14, 2008 | Comments (0) | by The Hundley

Nickname: Thunder

Played for The Cub: 2005-2008

Random Write-up: Obviously, we have a soft spot in our hearts for dear Thunder. Shit, need I direct you to the title of this very page? It was a sad, sad day 'round these parts when he no longer donned the blue and white, but you already knew that. Murton broke onto the scene in aught five, coming on late in the season, being very un-Dusty like - showing patience at the plate and going about his job like a professional. Skeptics cried foul, surely his robust .321 average was only a product of a small sample size. Never one to be fueled by his critics, Thunder nonetheless put up a beauty of a 2006 season, when he finally got some steady playing time and put up a .297/13/62.

Expectations were high, trophies were handed out, babies were kissed, backs were slapped...and then Lou came to town. Gone was his steady playing time. Gone were the chants of "THUNDER MATT" from the bleachers. All of that was forced to yield to people named Alfonso and Cliff. True to form, the stoic and ginger-headed gentleman never complained, even when he was sent back down to Des Moines. 2008 was more of the same, with Murton being relegated to pinch hitting duties and an occasional spot start. It was just the wrong time. In an era still smelling of pharmaceuticals and backne, there wasn't much room for line drive hitting outfielders. Murton was shipped to Oakland, and just like that, up and vanished like a fart in the wind.

What the hell?: Murton was actually a first round pick of the Red Sox in 2003 after playing college ball at Georgia Tech, coming to the Cubs along with Nomar Garciaparra in 2004. Who would have guessed that Murton was the one that would end up having the greater impact on the team? (Chip Wesley, that's who).

On August 3rd, 2006, you probably remember exactly where you were and what you were doing. Murton tied a Major League record by hitting 4 doubles in one game against the Arizona Diamondbacks in what would be forever known as "The Murton Game".

Was named a Freshman All American by Baseball America in 2001 for Georgia Tech.

10 Murton Urban Legends:
  • Matt Murton caused the housing crisis
  • The rug doesn't match the drapes.
  • Had the hottest selling jersey on eBay in August of 2006.
  • Had to shave Mike Remlinger's back as a rookie.
  • Avid collector of the now defunct Yugo automobiles.
  • Last statement as a Cub was "If you can only see one movie for the rest of your life, it should be Mickey Blue Eyes"
  • Was nicknamed "Clown Pubes" at Georgia Tech.
  • Boyhood idol was World B. Free
  • Shouted "Skeet skeet!" after every line-drive hit.
  • He reads Thundermatt.com daily.

War Hero: Hair Metal

October 14, 2008 | Comments (0) | by Rich Funk

What happened to rock and roll?

Seriously, where did it go? And when is it coming back?

Most of what passes as "rock" today makes me shudder in disgust. Sure, anyone getting played on the radio is making much more money being a musician than I am (which is $0), but it doesn't mean I can't make myself heard. A quick look at the top rock songs in America comes up with a bunch of bands that are "just glad to be here" and will be forgotten in 5 years. Hinder? Saving Abel? Trapt? These are the guys making millions of dollars and touring the country?

Thanks, but no thanks. I'll stick with my hair metal bands from the 80's.

Now it may seem hypocritical of me to slam a lot of the current rock acts as mindless clones of one another without any staying power while at the same time throwing my support behind such timeless acts as Stryper, Winger and Ratt. After all, weren't most hair metal bands mindless clones of one another?

Well, yes. But at least they had personality.

When you compare the great hair metal bands of the late 70's and early 80's with most of the nu-metal/emo rock of today, hair metal comes out on top in every category. Both kinds of music may seem equally crappy to the untrained eye (ear?), but a closer look at why hair metal is so awesome will reveal why it is head, shoulders and hair above all other kinds of rock.

1. The Excess

Hair metal could not exist and flourish in any other time than the late 70's and 80's, when excess was king. If you didn't live at the time, go read American Psycho or watch Wall Street to really get a feel of why excess was king during those years. More was better, and nothing reflected this better than hair metal. Your band dresses funny? My band is going to dress even funnier. You use 3 bottles of hairspray a night and wear tight leather pants? My hair will be bigger and my pants will be even tighter! Hair metal was all about taking what other bands were doing at the time, and not just one-upping them, but sometimes 5-to-10-upping them. It was all about who could play the longest solos, who could fingertap the fastest, who could play the longest setlist.

And the action wasn't confined to just onstage. Bands would become legendary as stories spread about how many groupies they could bang or how many drugs they could ingest without dying (or if they did die, how long they could be 'legally dead' before being revived by the paramedics). All of this sound good to you? Pick up The Dirt if you haven't already. It takes a lot to make me feel queasy, but just reading about the amount of drugs Motley Crue ingested in their heyday was enough to make me feel ill a few times during this book.

2. The Live Shows

So who wins from this constant game of "Anything you can do, I can do better"? The fans, of course! With live shows getting more and more outrageous just to keep up with the times, fans would pack arenas and not know exactly what they were going to see, but having a pretty good idea that it would probably blow their minds. And they were right most of the time. From pyrotechnics and flame jets 3 stories tall to levitating and spinning drum kits to epic drug-fueled 20 minute guitar solos, you could go to 50 concerts a year and conceivably see something you've never seen before at every one of them.

With a lot of these bands taking so many drugs, there was always a decent chance they would take the stage late, if at all. And yet people would still fork over their hard earned money and wait in line for days to see these bands because their live shows were just that good. Most of the time, the live performance and spectacle was more important than the actual music being played.

3. The Mystery

There was no internet in every house in the 80's. There were no social messaging sites and no text/video messaging. So word about rock stars had to float out through mostly-underground rock magazines. More often than that, word would get around through word of mouth, which was like a giant game of telephone. And with the amount of depravity and excess going on anyway, some of these stories could get out of control fast. "I know a guy who goes to school with this guy who's dating my cousin and she said that this guy went to a Poison show 2 weeks ago and said that Bret Michaels set their drummer on fire during the encore. And the dude kept playing!" With these mythical stories of debauchery and anarchy growing and growing as weeks went on, people would love their favorite bands even more. They'd shell out more money to fan clubs and buy posters and wait in line for days longer just to get into their shows and see if this was all true. There was no TMZ.com to give you the truth. Most of these artists you saw only in posters and music videos, which is when they look the most badass.

4. Not Just For The Boys

While young males age 12-25 were probably buying up the most hair metal albums at the time, there were a lot of females that had posters of David Coverdale, Nikki Sixx and "Diamond" David Lee Roth on their walls. One of the biggest differences between rock music in the 80's and now is that modern rock music is stereotyped as being "just for boys". In this day and age, even female fronted rock bands like Flyleaf and Evanescence are seen as inferior bands, largely because they have girls in them. Remember The Donnas, the all-girl rock band from earlier this decade? They were dismissed as nothing but a joke by most even though their ability to rock was actually better than most of their contemporaries.

But in the 80's, not only were female rockers accepted, they were HOT! If you're anything like me, the first name that just popped into your head was "Lita Ford". Not only could she rock out, but she sang songs about partying, smoking and drinking just as much as anyone else, which made her the object of obsession by many a hair metal fan. If someone like that came out these days, they'd probably be lumped in with country music. Likes to drink and smoke? Loves to party? Acts like "one of the boys"? Sounds an awful lot like Gretchen Wilson to me.

The point is, in the 80's, it was more commonplace not just to see female rock artists, but female rock fans. I'm sure it had a lot to do with 80's metal band members being thought of more as sex symbols than modern rock artists. Guys and girls could enjoy taking in a Van Halen show.

Who's going to take their girlfriend to a Three Days Grace show these days?

5. Hair Metal Was More Fun

It just was. These days, rock songs are either all emo and whiny or dark and depressing. During the 80's, you had nothing but a constant stream of songs all about letting loose and having fun, sober or not. Pop in Poison's Nothing But A Good Time and give it a listen. You know what it's about? Having a good time! There are no hidden messages. There are no secret lyrics to a girl that broke up with you years ago. it's about going out and having fun with your friends. And even if you've spent all your money, you shouldn't worry because things will work out. Right now, just get drunk and have some more fun!

6. No Distractions

Another huge difference in the staying power of 80's hair metal bands versus today's rock bands is how people listen to their body of work. One of the things that always irks me about today's music industry is iTunes. I love how iTunes lets people get music instantly, but it's pretty much killed the "album" for many people. If you like a 3 Doors Down song, chances are you'll just buy the 1 or 2 songs you like off of iTunes, especially if you aren't familiar with a lot of their music. You might really like 3 Doors Down, but you'll never know because you only bought a track or two.

But in the 80's, if you liked Cherry Pie by Warrant, you had to go out and buy the Cherry Pie album. And if you've got the whole album, chances are you're going to listen to the whole thing. And let's not forget that these people were listening on records and cassette tapes. There was no track skipping, so chances are you'd be more inclined to listen to a whole lot of songs instead of hitting 'skip' after the single you wanted to hear was over.

The fact that 80's hair metal lives on today is a great sign. The people secretly yearn for it to make a comeback. Remember when The Darkness had that huge hit a few years back? Have you seen how many copies of the heavily-hair-metal-influenced Guitar Hero video game have been selling? People will continue to love Ratt, Warrant, Skid Row, Scorpions, Van Halen, WASP, Poison, Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, Bon Jovi and Twisted Sister for years and years to come.

And for the rock music of the 2000's? I doubt we'll be seeing Dave Draiman of Disturbed on any VH1 reality shows any time soon. And that's the true measuring stick of success.

Monday Afternoon Hangover

October 13, 2008 | Comments (0) | by Rich Funk

Back for the 2008 NFL season, it's the Monday Afternoon Hangover. We'll be recapping all the action from this weekend in the NFL, so pop a couple Excedrin and fight off those beer shits as we get things underway.

Even with a ton of close calls and last-second wins this week, the majority of the games in Week um...whatever week this is, were boring as hell. No fighting. No late hits or dirty play. And wouldn't you know it? The Bears blow another 4th quarter lead.

How many days until Spring Training again?

Chicago 20
Atlanta 22
I understand the point of the "pooch kick" and trying to prevent a long return. But if you're going to kick it short, you've got to keep in mind that a 20 or 30 yard pass could put the opposing team within field goal range. If I were Kyle Orton, I'd be pissed. With just a little smarter play and the ability to not blow 4th quarter leads, the Bears could easily be 6-0.

Baltimore 3
Indianapolis 31
Peyton "Douche" Manning has his first "Peyton Manning" game of the season. I was expecting a more dangerous game than this with Ray Lewis stabbing people on one side and Marvin Harrison shooting people on the other. Sadly, this game didn't end with any murders.

Detroit 10
Minnesota 12
The Lions sucked under Matt Millen. The Lions still suck after he's gone. But at least now they're entertaining, right? They aren't? Aw shit.

Oakland 3
New Orleans 34
Is it just me or was every game this week either decided by less than 3 points or more than 25? Drew Brees continues to not only play well for the Saints, but to keep sticking it to the Dolphins. Remember when Miami decided to pass on signing Brees and picked up Daunte Culpepper instead? FAIL.

Cincinnati 14
NY Jets 26
Thomas Jones scored 2 touchdowns. other than that, everyone else in this game was a wasteland statistically. I looked at this box score and saw nothing worth liking. DRRRAIIIINNNAGGGEEE!

Carolina 3
Tampa Bay 27
Jeff Garcia comes out on top of Jake Delhomme and the Panthers. Garcia says he "couldn't think of a better place to be."

St. Louis 19
Washington 17
This game's passing leader? Washington's Jason Campbell with 208 yards. Rushing leader? Washington's Clinton Portis with 129 yards. Receiving? Washington's Antwaan Randle El with 87 yards. So how the hell did the Redskins manage to lose this one? Clearly it has something to do with their semi-racist mascot.

Miami 28
Houston 29
The Texans were down by 6 points and faced 4th and goal from the 4 yard line. Fail to score, and they fall to 0-5. QB Matt Schaub calls his own number and runs it in himself on a QB draw. That, my friends, is having a set of brass balls.

Jacksonville 24
Denver 17
Denver suffers a rare home loss. Jacksonville finally avenges their bitter loss to the Broncos in the 1997 AFC Wild Card game.

Dallas 24
Arizona 30
Jesus Christ was this game exciting. After a terribly sloppy and boring first half, the 4th quarter was the bomb with the Cowboys scoring 10 points in the last few minutes to force overtime. Not one, but two Cardinals came through on a Dallas 4th down punt to block it and take it into the endzone for the win. This is the furthest into the season the Cardinals have been in first place since 1872.

Philadelphia 40
San Francisco 26
Just as she did when the show was on the air, Sweet Dee is trying to live the Sex and the City life now that there is a movie. Her hopes of going out with the gals to a martini bar just never seem to come together. Maybe that's because she hangs out with 4 men in a pub. 4 men who are currently discussing a poop problem Charlie and Frank are having.

The two share not only an apartment but a bed and for the second time they have found a piece of poop between them upon waking. Neither bunk mate is willing to confess. Charlie's PJ's with back flap and Frank's giant dress shirt that he sleeps in are used against the other as proof against the other. While none of the guys seem concerned with Dee's problem, Dennis at least seems intrigued by a mystery: Who Pooped the Bed?

Green Bay 27
Seattle 17
I fell asleep during this game it was so boring. Hey, that Favre guy didn't play for Green Bay. His streak is over! Ha! What a douchebag.

New England 10
San Diego 30
Did anyone else watch this game? Because for every one person that was watching it, that's one more person than there were defensive coordinators for the Patriots watching. If they were, they would have seen early that Vincent Jackson (and everyone else) completely owned New England corner Deltha O'Neal all night. Bench him please. As much as I hate New England, I hate the Chargers even more.

The Golden Nutcup Team
Wear it with pride fellas!

QB - Drew Brees, NO (320 yards, 3 TD)
RB - Maurice Jones-Drew, JAC (125 yards rushing, 2 TD)
WR - Andre Johnson, HOU (10 catches, 178 rec yards, 1 TD)
WR - Marvin Harrison, IND (3 catches, 83 rec yards, 2 TD)
TE - Marcedes Lewis, JAC (3 catches, 64 rec yards, 1 TD)
DEF - Indianapolis (3 points allowed, 3 INT, 2 fumbles recovered)

The Flaming Bag Team
Cuz poop is funny!

This week's Flaming Bag team is every Chicago Bears player involved in the last 11 seconds of their game. HOW DO YOU LOSE THAT GAME???

Monday Night Prediction:
Cleveland over NY Giants

Crack open a beer...Because college football season is officially underway! So each week, I will (attempt) to recap the best - and the worst - games for you in quick and easy fashion...Much like your girlfriend at a frat party...Zing!

Premium games on tap...

No. 5 Texas def. No. 1 Oklahoma 45-35: This game definitely lived up to the Red River hype. Texas trailed for most of the game, but kept fighting back to keep themselves in it. It was 28-20 Sooners in the third quarter, but Texas scored a touchdown to make it 28-27. Then, Oklahoma tried a fake punt, but it went awry, and Texas kicked a field goal to make it 30-28. But in the 4th quarter, Oklahoma scored again to make it 35-30. But the Longhorns answered with a touchdown to take the lead, and another for good measure. Hook 'em horns, indeed. My hat goes off to Sam Bradford, who threw 5 touchdowns - and lost. And might I add that if anyone should be playing quarterback for Texas, it's a guy named Colt McCoy. Good to see the "Texas-sounding quarterback name" tradition has lived on since Major Applewhite.

Mississippi State def. No. 13 Vanderbilt 17-14: So much for Vandy going 6-0 for the first time since 1928. A few fun facts from this game: The Bulldogs held Vanderbilt to 107 yards of total offense...They held the Commodores to 1 of 10 on third down conversions...And they held quarterback Chris Nickson to 15 yards. Mississippi State also had 2 interceptions in the second half. In other Commodores news, it is rumored that Lionel Richie will have a new album coming out soon. How do I know this? Because on his website, it says "New album coming soon."

No. 7 Texas Tech def. Nebraska 37-31 in OT:
Texas Tech was up 31-24 in the 4th quarter, but Nebraska scored a touchdown with under 30 seconds left to tie the game and send it into overtime. Texas Tech scored a touchdown in overtime, but the extra point was no good - leaving the door open for Nebraska if they could score 7 points during their overtime possession. But Jamar Wall picked off Nebraska's quarterback to preserve the win.

Honorable Mention: Arkansas def. No. 20 Auburn 25-22 (Congrats on your win, Mr. Petrino...But did you know that the Atlanta Falcons have a better record than Arkansas?); No. 22 UNC def. Notre Dame 29-24 (UNC is a basketball school, dammit!); No. 17 Oklahoma State def. No. 3 Missouri 28-23 (My inside source has confirmed that Mike Gundy is still a man...And he's still 40).

Might As Well Call It The "Seriously Pissed Off" House:

Toledo def. Michigan 13-10
: Michigan’s K.C. Lopata missed a 26-yard field goal with 4 seconds left to give the Rockets the win. Michigan now has their worst 6-game record since 1967. This was also Michigan's first loss to a MAC team. Rebuilding is fun.

Games that resembled the foam at the end of a keg of Natty Light:

No. 11 Florida def. No. 4 LSU 51-21: Wow. I was not expecting such a blowout in this game. Oh well...At least we didn't have to watch Tebow cry this year.

No. 14 Utah def. Wyoming 40-7: Boooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnngggg...

TMS Alma Mater roundup
(schools attended by TMS bartenders highlighted in green):

No. 6 Penn State def. Wisconsin 48-7: Penn State remains undefeated, and is now ranked No. 3.

No. 12 Ohio State def.
Purdue 16-3: The only touchdown in this game was the result of a blocked punt.

Iowa def. Indiana 45-9: Iowa ends its 3-game losing streak with a rout of Indiana.

Northern Iowa def. Illinois State 31-17: Junior quarterback Pat Grace was responsible for all four of UNI's touchdowns - he threw for two, and rushed for two. He was named Missouri Valley Football Conference's Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. It was also UNI's homecoming...And I'm, like, totally pissed that no one asked me to the dance.

Oregon def. UCLA 31-24: The Bruins almost won this football game. That's good enough for me.

Huntingdon def. Euerka College 62-0: Now THAT'S the Eureka football team I know and love!

Air Force def. San Diego State 35-10: Hopefully, the Aztecs can get a win next week against New Mexico.

Illinois Wesleyan University def. Millikin 42-0: Senior receiver Martin Ceisel had 9 catches for 170 yards and two TDs.

Florida State - DNP this week

TMS Beer Project: Mojave Gold

October 12, 2008 | Comments (0) | by Governor X

With the name Saloon included in our moniker, one could surmise that we here at TMS like to drinky drinky. One that would make such an assumption would be correct, thereby throwing out the whole, 'when you assume you make an 'ass' out of 'u' and 'me' bullshit. We also like to plagiarize each other. In the same vein as the Wrigleyville Bar Project, we are proud to bring you another installment of the TMS Beer Project. The premise is simple: we review beers. Each rating will feature a variety of scores from 1-10 and comments from the bartender. This is a public service damn it. We don't want you to be the sucker who pays $15 for a six pack of some overrated Belgian cat piss. Now, we all drink massive amounts of beer so we know what we speak of. Each of us seem to have a favorite style of beer though. Will we be reviewing macrobrews like Bud and Coors? Oh you bet your Aunt Susie's ass we will. For purposes of this science experiment, and it is in the name of science, those will be the "control" group. Use them as a base line for when we review lesser known imports and microbrews. Without further ado, I bring you our next beer:

Mojave Gold

Brewery: Indian Wells Brewing Co., Inyokern, CA

Type: Lager

Receptacle: 12 ounce bottle

Drinkability (1 being Jim Jones' kool-aid, 10 being the nectar of the gods): 10, Being a bit of a macrobrew snob (if such a thing exists), I'm always a little skeptical of microbrews. All too frequently they don't lend themselves to multiple bottles. This however is smooth and highly drinkable. I could easily run through 3 or 4 in the time span it takes Sarah Palin to answer a tough question like "what's your favorite color?"

Heartiness (1 being fresh mountain spring water, 10 being a pureed British steak infected with mad cow disease): 4, There's a little meat to this but I wouldn't by any means call it hearty. No need to order those "rib sticking meals" from the Mike Golic commercial to lose weight after you have a few.

Intoxication (1 being your friend's weird pentecostal grandmother high on Jesus, 10 being Boris Yeltsin on a week long bender in the Crimea): 3, Clocking in at 4.4% alcohol, its going to take a few of these to get you drunk. Fortunately it tastes so damn good you won't mind.

Celebrities You May See Drinking This Brew: Sheryl Crow, Bryan Cranston, Robert Plant, and Coco Crisp (5 points if you get this)

Affordability ($ being chicklets in Tijuana, $$$$ being diamond encrusted braised lamb shank from a trendy cafe on the Champs d'Elysee): $, Seven bucks at a trendy store like Whole Foods translates to about $5 per six pack at a proper store.

Overall: 9, I absolutely love this brew! I hail from a two-mule desert town like Inyokern, so I bought it merely out of curiosity. Its one of the more pleasant surprises of my alcohol drinking life. Its easy to drink and tastes great. Mojave Gold is definitely making it into my regular rotation.

Downtown Inyokern...where it all happens.

Welcome to Link Bulimia, where purging never felt so good. This is your one stop shop for all the stupid, violent, and horrifying links that I stumble across during my weekly laps around the internets. If you happen to find something particularly jarring to where you'll never be able to "un-see" it, please pass it right along to linkbulimia@gmail.com. Enjoy and make sure to wash your hands afterward.

Celebrity NFL Picks with The Prophet Joseph Smith

October 09, 2008 | Comments (0) | by Governor X

The 2008 NFL season is finally upon us and in the tradition of the Wrigley 7th inning stretch, TMS will bring in B-list celebrities none of you have heard of to provide NFL picks. Last week insane former newsman Dan Rather went 9-5. His folksly homespun charm did a nice job of sweeping John Mark Karr under the rug. Our celebs are now 44-30 on the year. Last night, while sleeping soundly I was stirred by a vision of the angel Moroni. He revealed to me the location of two golden tablets containing the 2008 Week 6 NFL picks of the Prophet Joseph Smith. After digging them up and using seer stones to interpret them, I can reveal the wisdom contained within to you now:

Behold, it came to pass that on the 9th day of 10th month of the 2008th year of our Lord, the following NFL picks would be made. As you may have guessed, I read them out of a hat.

Chicago at Atlanta
All the people picking Atlanta are wrong. I alone will tell you the one true pick of this game.

Pick: Bears 27 Falcons 10

Miami at Houston
If Houston actually manages to win this one, I will personally appear and bestow the Melchizedek priesthood on Gary Kubiak. They both end in K you see. Thats just a little 19th century humor for you.

Pick: Dolphins 37 Texans 28

Baltimore at Indianapolis
Peyton Manning is a douche.

Pick: Colts 12 Ravens 9

Detroit at Minnesota
This game promises to be so bad even your magic underwear won't stop you from pooping yourself.

Pick: Vikings 32 Lions 24

Oakland at New Orleans
Don't be surprised if you're performing a baptism for Oakland's 2008 season next time you're in the temple 'cause these guys are dead!

Pick: Saints 24 Raiders 17

Cincinnati at NY Jets
Apparently its part of Heavenly Father's plan that the Bengals suck every year.

Pick: Jets 38 Bengals 9

St. Louis at Washington
Deceased former Rams owner Georgia Frontiere had 7 husbands. Amateur hour. I had at least 30 wives before I lost count.

Pick: Redskins 38 Rams 17

Carolina at Tampa Bay
Jake Delhomme is unseemly and will never be allowed to join me and Heavenly Father on the glass planet of Kolob.

Pick: Panthers 21 Bucs 17

Jacksonville at Denver
Little known fact: Jay Cutler holds the title of Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve.

Pick: Broncos 16 Jags 13

Dallas at Arizona
Before I told everyone the Garden of Eden was in Missouri, I tried telling them it was actually in Apache Junction, Arizona. No one was buying that so I had to go back to the drawing board, err, I mean pray.

Pick: Cowboys 34 Cardinals 27

Philadelphia at San Francisco
What people say about Lamanite QBs just isn't true. Philly will win this one, which is good for that city since their baseball team won't bring them any joy over the next week.

Pick: Eagles 29 49ers 21

Green Bay at Seattle
In order to find out who will win this game, you must reach level OT VI and donate $700,000. Whoops, wrong religion!

Pick: Packers 30 Seahawks 13

New England at San Diego
The Chargers need this one or the unwashed rabble of San Diego will demand blood atonement from Norv Turner.

Pick: Chargers 28 Pats 14

NY Giants at Cleveland
And it came to pass that the Giants are much better than I or anyone else could have foreseen just a few short weeks ago. Playing garbage teams like Cleveland sure helps things...

Pick: Giants 35 Browns 20

Now that this ginormous statue of Jesus has your attention, let me tell you about Heavenly Father's plan for YOU...

Ronald McDonald Handicaps Things

October 09, 2008 | Comments (0) | by Chaim Witz

We caught up with a drunken Ronald McDonald, makeup smeared and breath reeking of cheap gin, outside of a IHOP in Peoria. He was with a whore. We asked him if he would answer a few questions and handicap various competitions. He stuck with the script for a short time before derailing completely, culminating with him threatening to 'slice (my) dick off' and then doing cartwheels into the street, where he was struck by a car. We believe he is doing ok.

The World Series: It is my firm belief that the Chicago Cubs will win it all this year. This is the year! Wooooooooo! (Starts to dance the '
Macarena') Wait what? They got beat? What the fuck? Are you serious? (Depressed) Oh God. Oh God. Please God no. I had so much money on....shit. This is not good. I need to lay low for a little bit. Just chill the fuck out. Do you have any money I can borrow? Just a few bucks, like ten thousand of them? Oh Sweet Baby Jesus help me. Ok, by default I'll go Yankees? What the shit? Are you kidding me? No dice? Christ. I'm gonna need more money. I think there's an ATM inside IHOP but that fucker charges like a $3 fee. Damn you economy!

The Presidency: I try not to get involved in Presidential politics, ever since my failed bid back in 82'. What do you mean there wasn't an election in 82'? Then why did I waste all that money on the smear campaign I ran against the Hamburgler? This is really fucking great. Just wonderful. (To whore) You get back here! Come here NOW!

So true story. I used to run into McCain occasionally back in the late Eighties. That crazy SOB. One night I was hanging with Johnny Mac, Tommy B and OJ on the Orifice Penetrator and we were all playing a game of gin rummy. OJ kept losing and he was sweating profusely, mumbling something about "killing me some suckas". Tommy was shitfaced and I think he thought we were playing strip poker, because he was basically nude. Long story short, some story comes on the news about the Keating Five and Johnny Mac loses his shit. Starts pulling at his hair, yelling at the screen, "Fuck you assholes! You'll never take me alive!" He proceeds to pull down his pants, fart, punch me in the face and then jump overboard. I've haven't seen him since. It was a dick move, but dammit if he isn't a maverick.

I have my doubts about 'that one' too though. He's African American, which scares me on account that I'm racist. I've also heard that he's going to raise my taxes. Granted, the guy who told me this was standing on a street corner wearing nothing but a sandwich board with the phrases "Boobies!" and "Finland has Nukes!", but I take a man, no matter how crazy, at his word. Then again, after this World Series debacle, I don't have any money left to tax. He does seem like he's for the common man though, and the common man needs Ronald McDonald. He needs fucking McDonalds man. The common man can't afford shit like Applebees and IHOP. Fuck it, we need change. I'll vote for that cat.*

Super Bowl: Is football done already? Oh, you're just asking me who I think will make it? Oh God, I am so drunk. Is this parking lot spinning? Also, do I have a boner? No and yes, you say? You've been a great help. Who does Joe Namath play for? I think his team will probably win it all. Have you seen that new Schick Razors commercial he's in? I need an agent like that. Someone that will fight for me. Do you think Barack Obama would represent me? How about that Sarah Palin? I would really like to have sex with her, I'm not gonna lie to you. (To whore) Get your ass back here! Now! I am your customer and you will listen to me! The customer is always fucking right!

Shark vs Killer Whale: What kind of shark? That question really bothers me. I don't know why, but it made me really sad. (Depressed) Oh my God.

Baseball MVP: In the National League, I think you have to go with Mantle, no doubt about it. No fucking dizzoubt. (Vomit burp) Son of a....I'm gonna have to wash this now. In the AL? Probably Dustin Pedroia.

Big Mac vs. Whopper: (Putting finger drunkenly to lips) Shhhhhhhh....I hate Mark McGwire and I got a Whopper in my pants.

(Ronald then proceed to insult me, shove the whore into a bush and cartwheel into traffic, where he was struck rather violently by a car.)

*Barack Obama does not in any way accept this endorsement.
