A Thunder Matt Movie Minute

No Country For Old Men

"A movie so scary that you will pee your pants and punch a small child."

The phrase 'knock your dick in the dirt' has risen to prominence in recent months here at the Saloon. Now, I could be a douche and take all the credit for coming up with such a poetic, awe-inspiring piece of prose, but in all honesty I think it was Nikki Sixx who I heard coin the phrase during some VH1 special on Heavy Metal. Perhaps it was a Behind the Music. Either way the 'dick' part was bleeped and I just assumed it was 'dick'. Looking back, one could surmise that he used some other euphemism instead of 'dick'. Take 'cock' for instance. Perfectly acceptable. Penis. Unlikely, as that seems too technical. Really the options are endless. Rod, chowder dumper, flesh twinkie, eight inches of blunt fury...I could go on, but fact is, most of you have stopped reading by now. Where was I? Oh yes. 'Dick in the dirt' just has a pleasant ring to it. Maybe it's the alliteration. Anyway, the last thing you want to do is beat a phrase (or in this case, a dick) into the ground (or in this case, the dirt).

But ladies and gents, "No Country For Old Men" knocked my dick in the dirt.

Based on the book by famous recluse Cormac McCarthy, "No Country" has a fairly simple premise*. The year is 1980. A hunter (Josh Brolin) stumbles across a brutal murder scene in the Rio Grande and finds a giant stash of heroin and a suitcase filled with two million dollars. He wisely chooses the money over the heroin. He makes a few unfortunate decisions and soon finds himself being hunted by a serial killer who goes by the name Chigurh (Javier Bardem), who is in turn being hunted by a world-weary sheriff (Tommy Lee Jones).

Directed by the Coen Brothers, this one is certainly more Blood Simple than it is The Big Lebowski. But even with this serious material, their dark humor and smart dialogue are still on display, which is good, as it helps ease the tension. It's not until after you chuckle that you realize your whole body had been tensed up and that you may have even forgotten to breathe.

The first hour and a half is a atmospheric thriller of unparalleled greatness. Javier Bardem, whose haircut makes him a rather unlikely candidate for a Monkees cover band, is great as Chigurah, the most terrifying screen presence since Hannibal Lecter. Josh Brolin is equally great as the unwitting hero, trying to stay one step ahead of this force of evil. Tommy Lee Jones, who was actually born with a Sheriff's uniform on, is solid too, like a cold glass of 2% milk.

The last half hour of the film is an abrupt and quite jarring shift, in both plot and tone. It is one of those endings that critics and pseudo-intellectuals will probably rave about, but will cause general movie going audiences to scratch their heads and let out a collective 'what the fuck?' It is both ambitious and ambiguous. Some people will love it. Others will probably abhor it.

Personally, I'm torn on the ending. At first I was frustrated. Dammit. How could such a great movie have such a unsatisfying ending? Alas, I am beginning to have a change of heart on this one. For one thing, I can't get this movie out of my head. That has got to be a good sign. I'm jonesing to see it again, like Pete Doherty looking for his next fix. Right now I am about halfway through the book (a quick read) and the ending supposedly stays true to the book. I think (or hope) once I finish the book, I will be able to make more of an informed judgement about the movie and hopefully the book will answer some of my nagging questions. That said, I highly recommend reading the book first, then seeing the movie. I imagine that the ending wouldn't be so jarring had I read the book first. If you can't read (in which case, why are you trying to read this?), listen to the audio book.

Either way, "No Country" is one of the better movies of the year, and one that I think will be looked upon as a 'masterpiece' given time. The cinematography is top notch and the score is minimalist. In fact, there really is no score or music. Even the closing credits roll over a quiet black screen. The only thing to be heard at the end was the sound of me whimpering followed by the large, mustachioed man in the seat next to me asking me to please get off his lap. Picking my dick up off of the dirt, I kindly obliged.

Thunder Matt Rating: 4.25 Spittoons Out of 5, upon initial viewing. This could go as high as five upon completion of the book, coupled with a second viewing and the completion of my GED.

*I say 'simple premise' on most of my reviews mainly because I hate typing up a synopsis. I usually just crib it from IMDB.

50 States/50 Bands: Alabama - Georgia

November 14, 2007 | Comments (0) | by Governor X

Suffering from insomnia one night, a vision came to me. It was, of course, not particularly useful. It was a vision of me recommending a musical act from each of the 50 states. More motivated than I have been in years, I sat down and hammered it out. Eons came and went. Civilizations rose and fell. Now I'm ready to share my baby with the world in five easy to digest posts. Naturally, the list reflects my own personal biases, so bring on the arguments. In some cases, there was no band or artist I liked from a particular state, and you can generally tell which ones those are.

Those download recommendations with an * can be heard on TMS Radio - so tune in and have a go.

Alabama - Alabama - Go figure eh? Three decades of harmonized country pop even your grandmother can love.

Download - Reckless*

Alaska - Jewel - Folk pop princess who once proudly lived in a car. She’s pretty much done at this point because the average Joe was too dumb to realize her 2004 CD “0304” was ironic and not an attempt to sell out. Morons.

Download - This Way*

Arizona - Jimmy Eat World - While there isn’t much “Arizona” in their sound, these guys are great. Their music takes me back to a time when I wasn’t such a bitter asshole.

Download - If You Don’t, Don’t*

Arkansas - Johnny Cash - You may not know it, but the Man in Black hailed from Arkansas. No blurb can suffice here, but he survived decades of cocaine, booze, prison concerts, and ultimately a rebirth thanks to Rick Rubin.

Download - The Man Comes Around*

California - Red Hot Chili Peppers - This is a given since they released a CD called Californication a few years ago and half their songs mention the state in some way. Now that they’ve finally given up on the rock/rap thing, they’re putting out the best music of their career.

Download - Otherside*

Colorado - John Denver - The late John Denver could have gone here or under West Virginia. He gets put here because Colorado hasn’t turned out any other famous musicians - and he adopted the last name of Denver for christ’s sake. Beyond that, when I hear "Rocky Mountain High", I don't think about West Virginia.

Download - Take Me Home, Country Road*

Connecticut - Liz Phair - What can I say? Connecticut sucks.

Download - Supernova

Delaware - George Thorogood & the Destroyers - Thorogood will one day burn in hell for releasing “Bad to the Bone” on the world.

Download - Cocaine Blues

Florida - Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - Bored with dominating the Southern rock scene, in 1997 Petty appeared in The Postman and currently has a recurring role on King of the Hill. What the Heartbreakers are up to today? Who the hell knows…

Download - Runnin’ Down a Dream*

Georgia - R.E.M. - College rock band and their reclusive lead singer with dubious sexuality makes big. My favorite band, R.E.M. taken their 80s roots (country rock) and 90s style (glam rock) and created a hybrid. Get off your ass and go buy their last CD, Around the Sun. You won’t be disappointed.

Monday Afternoon Hangover: Week 10

November 13, 2007 | Comments (0) | by Jake the Terrible Cubs Fan

Sorry we're a day late. Mel insisted on taking a day off to honor his fellow veterans. When I explained to him he's from Australia he snapped back with, "Have you not seen 'We Were Soldiers'? 'Lethal Weapon'? 'Air America'?" Touché Mel, touché.

Philadelphia 33
Washington 25
McNabb was on his game, but more importantly so was Brian Westbrook, as he's the real MVP of this Philly team. Of course I'm sure Donovan will take all the credit for the win. Tune in next week when McNabb struggles against the hapless Dolphins and proceeds to throw his team under the bus yet again.

Jacksonville 28
Tennessee 13
Vince Young actually had to throw the ball for once, as the Tennessee run game was brought to a standstill. Unfortunately for the Titans, Vince Young had to throw the ball, something that wouldn't be considered his strong suit. Thankfully for the Jags, the Quinn Gray Experience looks to be over as David Garrard comes back next week.

Northern Iowa 68
Indiana State 14
Just thought you'd like a little update on the best college football team in Iowa. The UNI Panthers ran the table in the Gateway Conference and with one game left against a weak Southern Utah, look to go undefeated and make another run in the playoffs. Go Panthers.

Pittsburgh 31
Cleveland 28
This was a tale of two halves for Cleveland. The offense looked good in the first half, taking a 21-9 lead. But someone must've forgot to tell them to come back out and play the second half. The Browns only score after halftime was a 100 yard kick return by Joshua Cribbs.

St. Louis 37
New Orleans 29
So much for New Orleans feel-good moment. Time to get back to trashing them. St. Louis leaves the ranks of winless teams as their offense was finally on track. Bulger threw for 302 yards and Steven Jackson was able to make an impact, rushing as well as passing for TD's. Brees threw 2 picks and Reggie Bush got knocked out.

Buffalo 13
Miami 10
Cleo Lemon and the Dolphins, keeping the 0-16 dream alive. In other news, Buffalo is terrible.

Denver 27
Kansas City 11
It was pretty much do or die for Denver this week, as they managed to take down the Chiefs. KC, without Larry Johnson to dump the ball to was barely functioning on offense. However it appears that Dwayne Bowe may actually be the first decent wide receiver the Chiefs have had since Otis Taylor.

Green Bay 34
Minnesota 0
I don't care about Detroit's record, hand the NFC North crown to Green Bay. Favre continues to throw like he's 27 instead of 67, and it appears that with Ryan Grant, they may actually have a discernible run attack as well. Also I want to thank all the media outlets for absolutely gushing all over Adrian Peterson last week, which all but ensured this knee injury was going to happen.

Atlanta 20
Carolina 13
Nobody wins when teams this bad play each other. How is Morten Andersen still alive and kicking in this league? More importantly, are competent kickers that difficult to come by that teams have to rely on 47 year old Danish guys? When Andersen made his NFL debut, fellow kickers Mason Crosby, Nick Folk, Robbie Gould, Shaun Suisham, and Stephen Gostkowski weren't even born yet.

Cincinnati 21
Baltimore 7
The Governor's prediction of the Ravens losing 10 games is still on track with this turd sandwich they delivered. The Bengals put up 21, so let's see who scored those 3 touchdowns. What? Shayne Graham kicked 7 field goals? Jesus! Shame on all of you.

Chicago 17
Oakland 6
Even as the Bears looked helpless in the 4th quarter staring at a 6-3 deficit, I felt calm. After all it is the Raiders we're talking about. Minutes later, Sexy Rexy found Berrian deep for the touchdown, and all was right in the world again.

Dallas 31
New York Giants 20
Yet again I find myself rooting for Dallas. What the hell is going on? I feel about as clean as Pete Doherty's undershirt after a 3-day coke binge. I guess my hatred of the Cowpokes has subsided a bit the last couple years. Tom Coughlin has held on to this coaching gig way longer than he rightly should. He's become the new Wayne Fontes.

Arizona 31
Detroit 21
It's a battle of the Bible Beaters. Not only did the Sultan of Stubble prove he loves Jesus more than Jon Kitna, but he could throw more touchdown passes as well. Kitna lost two fumbles as well as threw two picks to the Devil Karlos Dansby. Also I haven't professed my hatred of Mike Furrey lately, so here's a hearty F.U. to that ass clown.

San Diego 23
Indianapolis 21
My reaction to this game was not unlike the guys in "Bachelor Party" after they watch the porno movie that had all the dirty scenes cut out. What the fuck was that? Peyton throws 6, count 'em 6 interceptions as the Colts drop their second straight game. But the Chargers offense did very little to deserve that win. Rivers threw 2 picks and no TD's and LT was held to just 3.6 yards per carry. If it weren't for Darren Sproles' two returns, the Colts would've escaped with the ugliest win I've seen in quite a while, and I watch the Bears every week for Christ's sake.

Seattle 24
San Francisco 0
I didn't watch this game at all. There were no real fantasy implications for me, and outside of the earth opening up and swallowing Qwest Field, I could care less about these teams. All the news about Dick Nolan's death aside, the 49ers look absolutely miserable. I think you could argue that Oakland is the better Bay Area team at this point. Alex Smith has a QB rating of 57.2, worse than Vince Young and Cleo Lemon.

The Golden Nutcup Team
Wear it with pride fellas!

QB - Donovan McNabb, PHI (251 yards, 4 TD, all of the credit)
RB - Brian Westbrook, PHI (20 carries, 100 yards, 5 catches, 83 yards 3 TD)
WR - James Thrash, WAS (5 catches, 85 yards, 2 TD)
WR - Terrell Owens, DAL (6 catches, 125 yards, 2 TD)
TE - Jeremy Shockey, NYG (12 catches, 129 yards, 1 TD)
DEF - San Diego (15 points allowed, 2 sacks, 6 INT)

The Flaming Bag Team
Don't put them out with your boot, Harold!

QB - Peyton Manning, IND (6 INT, How often do we get to throw a flaming bag at Peyton?)
RB - Jamal Lewis, CLE (16 carries, 35 yards, 1 fumble)
WR - Steve Smith, CAR (Weeps each night as he stares at his jersey on a hanger with a Delhomme jersey over top of it. "Jake, I swear.")
WR - Darrell Jackson, SF (1 catch, 4 yards, used to be good)
TE - Antonio Gates, SD (3 catches, 26 yards, 100's of fantasy managers wishing they weren't so stupid to have picked a TE in the second round)
DEF - Minnesota (34 points allowed)

Monday Night Pick
I like Seattle. I bet they shutout the Niners.

Drop the "Devil" and Pick Up the Lord

November 09, 2007 | Comments (0) | by Jake the Terrible Cubs Fan

It's Friday, and everyone has the mental focus of an ADD kid lost in a video arcade*, so I'll talk about something completely benign and worthless**. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays, dropped the Devil and picked up the Lord!

Well the part about Jesus isn't really true, but they did drop the word "devil" from their nickname as well as changed up their logo and uniforms. Check it out.

"After months of speculation about coming changes, the Rays spilled the beans about the subtraction of "Devil" from the name, their new team colors -- navy blue and light blue -- and a new icon, a bright yellow sunburst invoking the magnificence of life in the Sunshine State."
-Bill Chastain / MLB.com
Whaa? So you're going away from the stingray and choosing a ray of sunshine? Maybe they did pick up the Lord. At first I thought, "A bright yellow sunburst? Weak." But then I realized, the sun's rays are probably deadlier than a stingray, no offense to Steve Irwin (R.I.P. mate). Also I find the new icon incredibly ironic. "A bright yellow sunburst invoking the magnificence of life in the Sunshine State". Really? You wouldn't know it if you were watching the team play in the cold, depressing concrete hellhole known as Tropicana Field.

I have to say the logo is a definite improvement though. They no longer look like a Single-A team. You know the ones that have the ridiculous names merely to sell more merchandise, like the South Alabama Sand Cooters, or the Jefferson City Crap Weasels. No, now they have the look of a AAA team, which is more in line with how they really play.

Alright let's look at the new uniform. Pictured to the right is their new home jersey. Pretty simple, nothing overly dramatic. They could've maybe added a little more- wait, is that a stingray on the sleeve?

What the hell, so you're keeping the stingray as well as adding a ray of sunshine as your icon? Can you do that? Is that really allowed? I didn't know you could use different meanings for your nickname. Then again I guess most teams have names that aren't quite as ambiguous.

Why stop there? Why not add some other icons to it?

Brilliant!

*Do they still have video arcades, or did I just horribly date myself? You mean kids don't go play Pit Fighter and Shinobi?

TMS Gold Glove Awards

November 07, 2007 | Comments (0) | by Jake the Terrible Cubs Fan

The 2007 Gold Glove Awards were given out, and looking at the list of winners, two words come to mind.

Horse and shit.

I mean come on. I love Derrek Lee as much as the next guy, but he wasn't nearly as sharp defensively as he's been in past years, not to mention Todd Helton was much more deserving of the award this year. I started perusing the list and there was very little I agreed with. So to honor those that got the shaft (and some that didn't) I give you the TMS Gold Glove Award winners.

A Mile High Minute/Sun Devil Second: Week 9

November 06, 2007 | Comments (0) | by Governor X

Ugly, ugly weekend - I'll just phone this one in.

Detroit 44 Denver 7

Time to stick a fork in the Broncos and your head in the oven. Losing to Detroit is bad enough, but getting the living shit kicked out of you is a new level of humiliation all its own. To top it off, Denver had to go with Patrick Ramsey after a Cutler injury.

I'm at an absolute loss here. I don't know what to say other than Jim Bates (defensive coordinator) should probably start packing his bags.

Rock. Bottom.

Tampa Bay 17 Arizona 10

One stat can sum this up: Arizona's leading rusher was Edgerrin James...with 15 yards.

RoboKurt can't do it all himself people.

Sadly, as bad as both Arizona and Denver played this weekend, they're only one game out of first in their divisions.

Thoughts From Around the League

Mongoloid Manning and Skeletor go down, as I predicted, but no thanks to the refs. How many BS pass interference calls can they make in one game? They tried to hand this one to Indy, but no such luck. With everything going wrong, New England still won. I'm probably most happy to see the return of "Peyton Manning face" - its been far too long.

and now for something completely different...

Ha Ha, Look at You!

November 06, 2007 | Comments (0) | by Jake the Terrible Cubs Fan

A quick run through of the teams that roundly deserve us all to point and laugh at them.

Baltimore Ravens - Look I know that the corpse of Steve McNair isn't nearly as productive as the living Steve McNair was back in Tennessee, and I know that the Baltimore defense is getting older and has lost a step or two, but last night was ridiculous. Big Ben made you guys look absolutely stupid, tossing 5 TD passes in the first half, and I enjoyed every second of it. Every time they showed Brian Billick's face on TV, I couldn't help but think about Kornheiser constantly referring to Billick as a "preening shmo" on his radio show.

Michigan State Basketball - Sure it was only an exhibition game, but come on. You guys are ranked #8 in the polls and you drop one to Division II Grand Valley State? Everyone can point and laugh at them as they get dressed in the weight room and hallway, as Coach Izzo has kicked them out of their own locker room.

Nebraska Cornhuskers - The Cornhuskers to me, are the Green Bay Packers of college football. I hate their fans more than I hate the team. So to see the Kansas Jayhawks drop 76 on them is quite possibly the greatest thing ever. Bill Callahan's days as coach are definitely numbered. Rumor has it he's getting out of the coaching game and going back to work for his brother at the family's brake pad factory.

Speaking of Kansas, what the hell is going on with the bizarro college football season? Kansas is good, Kentucky is good, UConn is good. Did someone forget to remind them they are basketball schools?

Monday Afternoon Hangover: Week 9

November 05, 2007 | Comments (0) | by Jake the Terrible Cubs Fan

Christ, I'm tired and I haven't had enough coffee yet. Piss on Mel. He's on his own. Let's get down to business.

Tampa Bay 17
Arizona 10
The Bucs D wasn't afraid of Kurt Warner and his bionic left arm. To say the Cardinals offense was stifled is probably being too nice. Edge managed to score a TD despite only having 15 yards total on 9 carries. Looking at the box score I noticed Tampa's kick returner was M. Spurlock. I can only assume that it's documentarian Morgan Spurlock. Perhaps his next film is on closet case QB's in the NFL.

Tennessee 20
Carolina 7
Honestly I can't understand why some hate 'Football Night in America' so much. Olbermann doing highlights is 100 times better than listening to Terry Bradshaw stutter and slur through them. Anyway I bring this up because Keith had some classic lines on Vince Young last night, mainly cracking on the fact that he never throws the ball. Nonetheless Tennessee keeps winning. Also I realized that whenever I feel bad about the Bears current QB situation I only need to think of David Carr running around in the pocket like a chicken with his head cut off for Carolina. No wonder they brought in Rasputin Testaverde. And those white gloves. Jesus, did he steal them from a mime? It's embarrassing enough for Panther fans to have that guy behind center, but then he puts on his best Marcel Marceau impersonation before getting creamed by a DE.

Washington 23
New York Jets 20
What can you say about this game? Clinton Portis ran all over the place but the Redskins still could only muster up a single TD. Kellen Clemens did a good job of not sucking, so I would suspect he's secured his job as starting QB for at least another week.

New Orleans 41
Jacksonville 24

OK, OK, I'll give New Orleans some credit finally. They handled Jacksonville with no problem. Brees threw for 445 yards and 3 TD's as the Saints offense has finally hit their stride this season. After dropping their first four games, they've now rattled off four straight wins, and with St. Louis, Houston and Carolina coming up, should give Tampa Bay a strong run for the NFC South crown.

Minnesota 35
San Diego 17
Adrian Peterson is a beast. His 296 rushing yards is a new single game record. Who needs competent QB's when you got this guy running for you? San Diego drops to 4-4, which would make me happier if only the rest of the AFC West didn't completely suck as well.

Detroit 44
Denver 7
Wow Denver. I'm gonna say this is your rock bottom moment right here. To get blown out 44-7 is bad, but to the Detroit Lions? Come on! I don't care if they are 6-2. I refuse to live in a world where the Lions are worth a damn. Let's see, some highlights..... Jay Cutler got hurt, Patrick Ramsey still has a job in the NFL somehow, Shaun Rogers is still winded after his 66 yard interception return, and Jon Kitna loves Jesus more than Kurt Warner, hence the Lions triumph and the Cardinals failure.

Chicago
BYE

Hey, maybe there wasn't anything to watch, but I have to give some praise to the Bears offense. That's the best they've played in weeks.

Buffalo 33
Cincinnati 21
Buffalo is 4-4? Who knew? Marshawn Lynch had his first 100 yard game of his NFL career, and Chad Johnson pulled out all the stops with his wackiest celebration to date. The best part was when they strapped the neck brace on him, and then when he was carted into the ambulance, brilliant!

Cleveland 33
Seattle 30

What kind of year 3000 bullshit is this? The Browns and Lions have winning records? Damn you all to hell! With the current state of the NFC and AFC West divisions, I'm preparing myself for a 7-9 team to win one of them.

Atlanta 20
San Francisco 16

Alex Smith outdueled Joey Harrington for the shittiest QB performance. Harrington's 1 interception was no match for Smith's 3, plus he threw in a lost fumble for good measure. I would pick the Niners to lose the rest of their games, but then I noticed they still have to play the Rams and Cardinals again.

Green Bay 33
Kansas City 22

The Packers win again, improving to 7-1. In other news, Larry Johnson sprained his ankle, opening the door for Priest Holmes to take over. It'll be interesting to see how he does next week against Denver.

Houston 24
Oakland 17

Being a football fan in the Bay Area is about as pleasant as having gonorrhea in your eyes. For God's sake Oakland, Ron freaking Dayne put up 122 yards on you!

New England 24
Indianapolis 20
Wow, what a great matchup. I had no idea these two teams were even playing each other. Why didn't anyone mention it this week? All sarcasm aside I'm happy the Patriots won this game. For one, it was awesome watching Peyton getting the crap pounded out of him by the Pats defense. It was like Animal Planet footage of a crocodile taking down a jaguar. You don't see it that often, but when you do it's pretty kickass. And secondly, if anyone is going to go undefeated and finally bury the '72 Dolphins it's going to be this New England team. We all know that Indy would've eventually blown it to the Ravens or some team that is equally worthless.

Dallas 38
Philadelphia 17
I hate to say it, but I think I legitimately enjoyed watching the Cowboys win. Maybe because I hate the Eagles so much. Oh Philly, if only your offense could play as well as Andy Reid's kids inhale narcotics.

The Golden Nutcup Team
Wear it with pride fellas!

QB - Drew Brees, NE (445 yards, 3 TD)
RB - Adrian Peterson, MIN (30 carries, 296 yards, 3 TD)
WR - Lee Evans, BUF (9 catches, 165 yards, 1 TD)
WR - Terrell Owens, DAL (10 catches, 174 yards, 1 TD)
TE - Tony Gonzalez, KC (10 catches, 109 yards, 1 TD)
DEF - Detroit (7 points allowed, 5 sacks, 1 INT, 3 fumble recoveries, 2 TD)

The Flaming Bag Team
Don't put them out with your boot, Harold!

QB - Alex Smith, SF (17-38, 149 yards, 3 INT)
RB - Selvin Young, DEN (6 carries, 12 yards, terrible name)
WR - Morgan Spurlock, TB (super size this!)
WR - Chad Johnson's neck (not broken unfortunately)
TE - Tony Scheffler (1 fumble, that's all it takes to be a burning sack)
DEF - Philadelphia (38 points allowed)

Monday Night Pick
I like Pittsburgh to win, and not just because I wish the plague upon Brian Billick and his band of asshole misfits.

Underrated: Nicolas Cage

November 05, 2007 | Comments (0) | by Governor X

Somewhere along the line, it became cool to hate Nicolas Cage. Well, I'm not cool. I like Nicolas Cage (Nic as I call him when we hang out). Few actors have the ability to consistently deliver solid performances no matter what the role. Whether its serious, funny, or just stupid, Cage will do his level best to make it entertaining. Here are 10 reasons Nicolas Cage is underrated:

10. Fast Times at Ridgemont High - Nic's first film and the only one where he was credited under his birthname Nicolas Coppola. Wanting to avoid charges of nepotism, he changed his name to Cage. He is, of course, the nephew of Francis Ford Coppola & Talia Shire and the cousin of Sophia Coppola & Jason Schwarzman.

9. Ghost Rider - Remember when I mentioned stupid roles? Well here you go. Cage delivers precisely what you would expect in this comic book movie about a stunt motorcyclist who sells his soul to the devil. Cage seems to have a connection to comics. The name Cage was taken from comic book character Luke Cage and his son is named Kal-El, Superman's birthname.

8. The Wicker Man - I can't understand why this movie is so hated. If you want mind numbing over the top claptrap, watch the original. Here he plays a California cop who travels to a remote island to investigate the disappearance of a girl. In another life, I have to believe Nic would have been a CHP officer.

7. The Weather Man - In a film not many people saw, Cage nails his performance as a Chicago weather man who takes nothing but abuse from everyone in his life.

6. Face/Off - Another movie with an absolutely idiotic premise, Face/Off has Nic and John Travolta trade faces. Stupid idea, good movie. Both Cage and Travolta are at their best in this one when they're playing the villain.

5. 8MM - An old widow hires a PI to find out if her deceased husband was into snuff films. Yep. Cage plays the PI and is great as he slips into the perverse culture that produces snuff while investigating the crime.

4. Wild at Heart - Cage sings and fights his way through two hours of David Lynch weirdness. Like most Lynch films, if you aren't a fan, you probably won't appreciate all the bizarre shit going on here. The best part may be the fact that the snakeskin jacket came out of Nic's personal wardrobe.

3. Leaving Las Vegas - Nic wins the Academy Award for Best Actor playing a man drinking himself to death who falls in love with the hottest hooker ever. What more is there to say?

2. Lord of War - I could do an underrated post on this entire film. Cage plays Yuri Orlov, a Ukranian immigrant who makes a very good living as an international arms dealer. He manipulates his way into marrying the girl of his dreams and eventually gets hammered with the harsh reality of the career he has chosen. Ethan Hawke and Jared Leto are also great in Lord of War as a pious interpol agent and Yuri's screwed up brother. Yes, I just said Ethan Hawke and Jared Leto did a good job.

1. Raising Arizona - I won't say too much here since I suspect you may be reading more about this film on this blog soon enough, but suffice it to say, Raising Arizona is both Cage and the Coen Brothers' masterpiece.

So there you go. Ten brilliant performances by one of our most underrated actors. Fortunately for us, he isn't underrated in Hollywood. You may have noted that he has worked with the Coen Brothers and David Lynch. Well, they didn't quite make the cut, but he's also worked with Martin Scorsese (Bringing Out the Dead) and Oliver Stone (World Trade Center).

With the Patriots ready to take on the defending champion Colts in just a matter of hours, a number of journalists are focusing on the matchup between Archie's kid and pretty boy. I'm going to take this opportunity to thrust the spotlight on another pair of athletes that garner considerably less attention.

Before I do that, however, I'd like to take a minute and share a dream of mine with you. Like every kid growing up I spent my time in the driveway with my hoop practicing last minute shots and at the park down the street walking off homeruns. Everyone wants to be the hero, but I think it would be nearly as fun to be a bullpen catcher. Sure your jersey may not be the one every kid wants for Christmas but you're not being critiqued and second-guessed every night by an army of journalists and terrible announcers for every move you make and don't make. Your day basically consists of heading to the ballpark and hanging out in the bullpen shooting the shit with starts and hall of famers while making sure if someone needs to warm up that you've got their back. All this and more for the paltry league minimum of several hundred thousand dollars. And hey, if you land on a winning club you get to pocket a ring for your troubles.

Why am I telling you this? Because I'm going to take a look away from the field and towards the bench to compare everyone's favorite clipboard jokeys: Jim Sorgi and Matt Cassel.

Jim Sorgi played for Wisconsin and is the career pass efficiency leader (141.2), co-holder of most passing TD's in one game (5) and 6th in career passing yards in the school's history. Not bad. He's also Peyton Manning's backup, who has started every game in his NFL career, missing only one snap due to injury. Not a bad gig if you can get it.

Matt Cassel, on the other hand, has been perfecting the backup role for a bit longer. He was a "quarterback" at USC behind Heisman Trophy winners Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart. He did get to start a game though...as a tight end. Now he's holding a clip board for Tom Brady who's racked up 30 TDs and only 2 INTs on a way to a 136.2 rating so far this year. He got to see some playing time in the second half of the Miami game but unfortunately for him (and one of my fantasy leagues with team QBs) he promptly threw an interception. Last week during a rout of the Redskins he managed to scramble into the end zone for a score though.

Who would you rather switch solid gold cleats with? Do you think there's a chance they might actually be talking to each other during the game this weekend?

Matt: Hey, can you see the girl about 20 rows up from the chain gang holding the cardboard D CAF sign?

Jim: Uh...yeah I see her. Nice. Man, I wish I didn't have to stand here pretending to warm up while the kid filling up the Gatorade cups asks me to smuggle him a game ball.

Matt: Oh, I KNOW!

Jim: Did you see I got to play last week?

Matt: You too? Did you score?

Jim: Nah...but I did throw a pass that someone caught.

Matt: Wow, Tom gets mad when I throw near the end zone but last week they did let me run with the ball...and I made it in for the touchdown!

Jim: Crap, I have to go. Freeney needs to sit down.
